PASSCA
Another special thing which adds more beauty to the history of Mettupatty OUR LADY OF SEVEN DOLOURS CHURCH is PASSCA (the life history of JESUS Enacted). One cannot avoid this great event while speaking about the history of Mettupatty parish. Although many feast are celebrated in the parish PASSCA draws a great attention than any other feast. This is very famous to the extent when people utter the word Mettupatty immediately what comes to the mind is PASSCA. Although the event of PASSCA is held to many places in Tamil Nadu Mettupatty is one of the famous place which is known for the PASSCA
The Reasons for the speciality of this PASSCA are the following ;
1. It has been started before 326 years even before the church has been built.
2. The faithful (the lay people) take part in preaching the word of GOD to the ends of the earth through this PASSCA enactment.
3. Every year the following Friday, Saturday and Sunday of Easter, this great event is held. People from more than 96 villages gather here for the joyful celebration of this event. They resemble the feast of PASSCA which was celebrated by the people of old testament in the expectation of the messiah.
In those years in which there was no serial and light facility so they used fire for the light and they made human figures out of wood. They used coconuts shells and rope and dolls to move from one place to another it make an interesting one. As the years gone human beings started acting except the role of JESUS. Since these extend a view till 1969 that no human being is worth of acting as JESUS. In later years the role of JESUS are also held by human persons but today using the technology this event is held in a grand manner with the help of 140 persons. In the first day of the PASSCA JESUS’ Preaching, Miracles, passion and death of Jesus are enacted.
The first day PASSCA ends around 4:30 Am with the death of Jesus. Immediately the people carry the body of Jesus in procession through the main streets of the village. Many people participate in that procession with candles. In the procession many Muslim and Hindu people participate.
On the second day of the PASSCA is more about the Satan’s works of deception. How the people fall on the traps of Satan and commit sins. Also the punishment of sin and reward of living according to god’s way are enacted. At the end the resurrection and ascension of our Lord Jesus is acted.
On third day early Morning there is a high mass and car procession will start. Before the car procession the three religious leaders and people (Hindu, Muslim, and Christians) greet each other and finally Diocesan Bishop blesses and starts the car procession. In the evening around 6’O Clock there will be a grand Benediction by the Local Ordinary. More than 30,000 people receive the blessing of Risen Christ.
